After four decades of war, the Afghan people yearn for peace.

The Imagining Peace collection includes 10 x A1-sized art mount photos (including the title and about the author tiles).

I chose photos which encapsulate the diversity of Afghanistan and challenge our preconceived ideas of the country, its people and its culture. The images reveal a people not too dissimilar to you and I, a people who desire the same things we do: food, water, shelter, love, connection, intimacy. Above all, the collection reminds us that even in the most challenging circumstances, hope, love and peace can flourish.

The collection has been exhibited at the Wallsend Library in Newcastle in 2020, the Clive James Library in Kogarah in 2021, the Waverley Library in Bondi Junction in 2023, as well as the Northern Rivers Community Gallery in 2023.

In partnership with the Wallsend Library, I arranged various community events which included an exhibition launch with more than 100 attendees, school talks, a meeting with the Newcastle Youth Council, a community lunch with Zara’s House and Afghan women and children in the local area, screenings of Jirga and the animated film, The Breadwinner, and a talk with Forsaken Fighters and the local community of Afghan interpreters who worked with the Australian Defence Force in Afghanistan.

Brilliant. So privileged to hear stories of how others live and reflect what we can learn from others who are so far away and misrepresented.

Thank you for choosing such a meaningful exhibition and for upholding the integrity of the library as a community for cultural and literature conservation by utilising the space for regularly updated art. It was a powerful reminder of worlds beyond Australia and has sparked some great conversations about the topic of both privilege and care for the fellow human.
