El jimador

Chiapas, Mexico, 2018

In 2018, I reported on the migrant caravan, a movement of roughly 7,000 people from Central America to the United States. I joined the migration in Chiapas, a south-eastern state of Mexico which borders Guatemala. The caravan members either walked or hitched rides on petrol tankers or in cars.

In this photo, a farmer tends to his agave plants which are harvested primarily for the production of mezcal, sotol and tequila. The farmer is known as a jimador.
